Philip Morris, the tobacco giant that makes Marlboro cigarettes, has been ordered to pay $300m (£180) in compensation to a former smoker. Cindy Naugle won her case in Florida, where she sought damages due to the health problems she claimed were caused by smoking. The now ex-smoker is 62 and wheelchair bound because of the lung disease emphysema. Ms Naugle started smoking when she was 20 as she wanted to look older.
The payout comes after a major class action suit, which was filed in 2006, was thrown out. Since then 8,000 individual cases have been filed separately, with Ms Naugle’s award being the biggest to date. Philip Morris stated that it will challenge the decision.
