It is common for most schools to install and use CCTV systems for security purposes. These cameras are often situated both inside and outside the school premises to give clear coverage of all areas. Recently a school in Salford has come under investigation following the images of pupils getting changed being captured on their CCTV systems and subsequently viewed by staff.
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) which deals with the protection of data which is personal to individuals formed part of the investigation and has issued a statement. Jonathan Bamford, who is the Assistant Information Commissioner, said,
“CCTV should only be used for a pressing need. It is perfectly reasonable for a school to use CCTV to help secure its premises, but it shouldn’t be left switched on capturing images of school children changing during the day. When a school is staffed and children are on the premises, cameras will not generally be required for security purposes. Organisations that do capture images using CCTV are required by law to adhere to the Principles of the Data Protection Act.”
