Employees of the SPCK's Christian bookshop chain who were sacked when new owners took over their employment have won compensation. Many of the employees had their jobs terminated by e-mail when they refused to sign new contracts issued by the St Stephen Great Charitable Trust (SSG). The shop workers' union Usdaw lodged claims with the employment tribunal for all 32 workers, who were based in Norwich, Cambridge, Lincoln, Sheffield, Worcester, Carlisle, Chester, Exeter, Newcastle and York. The new contracts the employees were told to sign apparently incorporated longer hours, fewer holidays and poorer pension rights which many workers felt were unreasonable terms.
Usdaw entered into negotiations with SSG in consultation with members. The exact details of the compensation are subject to a confidentiality clause but are thought to include wages owed to workers who were dismissed. |
