Andrew Fowler, a 48 year old electrical engineer, has launched a campaign against the Gatso speed cameras following the issue of a speeding ticket against him. Mr Fowler was flashed by the camera in a 30mph limit allegedly travelling at 41mph. The camera is located on his daily commute route. Mr Fowler was certain his speedometer read 30mph when he passed the camera so he contested the ticket, claiming that the cameras do not operate properly in low temperatures. According to Mr Fowler, the cameras are only accurate between 0C and 70C and when he was recorded the temperature was -5C. Mr Fowler has held a clean driving licence for 20 years.
If the case is successful it will open the doors to many other people who believe they have been unfairly penalised. The appeal is set for July. Robert Gifford, Executive Director of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, said “The Home Office Type Approval procedure is very tough in order to ensure that motorists are not prosecuted unfairly. I suspect that the chances of his success are slim indeed." |
