This Flexible Working Policy outlines the right of eligible employees, both male and female, to request flexible working arrangements in order to care for a child or an adult.
The law gives some employees - those with parental responsibility for a child and carers of certain adults - the right to request a flexible working pattern and places a duty on employers to consider such requests seriously. Those with "parental responsibility" include biological parents, legal guardians, adoptive and foster parents and those who hold a residence order in respect of a child.
From 6 April 2009 eligibility for requesting flexible working was extended to employees with a parental responsibility for a child aged 16 and under. The policy reflects this change.
