Driving at Work Policy
Road traffic legislation imposes specific
requirements on employers in respect of vehicle use and maintenance.
Employers must carry out checks to ensure that employees have an
MOT certificate, are insured for business use, and have a valid
driving licence.
Employers also have responsibility under health
and safety legislation to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable,
the health and safety of their employees and others who may be affected
by their work activities. This includes the activity of driving
on public roads.
This Driving at Work Policy sets out the
steps to be taken to ensure that employees use the road as safely
as possible. It applies to employees who drive company owned or
leased vehicles (other than large goods vehicles or passenger service
vehicles which are subject to specific legislative requirements)
as an essential part of their employment as well as employees who
drive their own vehicle for occasional business use.
As well as document checks, the policy covers
the use of mobile phones while driving, safe journey planning and
checks to ensure vehicles are fit for use and fit for purpose.
This driving at work policy is suitable for
use in England, Wales and Scotland and covers the following:
- qualification to drive
- insurance
- roadworthiness of vehicle
- private vehicle checks
- vehicle fit for purpose
- fitness to drive
- use of mobile phones
- safe journey planning
- accident reporting
- disqualification from driving.
